NDMD Launches Structured School Hazard Quiz Framework to Strengthen National Disaster Awareness

February 5, 2026  ·  ajt

Nevis, Saint Kitts and Nevis, 5th of February, 2026 — The Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) has introduced a Structured School Hazard Quiz Framework as a central tool for monitoring and learning within the national Multiple Hazards Awareness Campaign. This initiative improves school-based risk communication by providing measurable, comparable, and scalable knowledge outcomes aligned with the Monthly Hazard Awareness Calendar.

The framework shows NDMD’s commitment to fostering a culture of preparedness among youth by integrating structured hazard education with strong monitoring, evaluation, and learning standards.

Programme Structure

Each month, a hazard-specific quiz will be:

  • Distributed to the school designated to lead that month’s hazard theme; and
  • Publicly announced to increase school-led awareness in the wider community.

To support evidence-based evaluation, the quiz system will capture:

  • Name of school
  • Student grade level
  • Student age
  • Student name (optional, to respect privacy)

Schools will also submit total enrollment figures. This allows NDMD to conduct proportional performance analysis, including:

  • Highest participation rates
  • Highest pass rates
  • Highest scoring averages

This model ensures fairness by evaluating performance relative to enrollment size instead of absolute student numbers.

Quarterly and National Integration

The framework follows a progressive learning structure:

  • Monthly Hazard-Specific Quizzes – Thematic assessments aligned with the hazard of the month
  • Quarterly Integrated Quiz – Consolidation of hazards covered within the quarter
  • IDDR National Comprehensive Quiz – A full multi-hazard assessment conducted nationally

This tiered system promotes continuous knowledge development and allows systematic tracking of learning outcomes throughout the academic year.

Performance Recognition Framework

The recognition system is cumulative and performance-based, rewarding consistency, engagement, and academic excellence. It features:

  • Monthly Performance Awards
  • Quarterly Award Aggregation
  • Comprehensive Quiz Award (IDDR National Assessment)

The Grand Finale Recognition during the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR) will combine:

  • Accumulated Monthly Awards
  • Accumulated Quarterly Awards
  • Performance in the National Comprehensive Quiz

Final distinctions will recognize sustained participation, overall knowledge, and commitment to disaster preparedness.

NDMD emphasizes that structured youth engagement is essential for strengthening national resilience. By making hazard education a measurable learning system, this initiative ensures disaster awareness is not only taught but also tracked, improved, and sustained.
