Tropical cyclone information statement
Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services
6:45 AM ECT Sun, Aug 25, 2019
This is for the Leeward Islands and British Virgin Islands….
Tropical Storm Dorian continues to be closely monitored by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services.
At 500 AM AST (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Dorian was located near latitude 11.0 north, longitude 51.6 west or about 795 southeast of the Leewards.
Dorian continues moving toward the west near 13 mph (20 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue today, followed by a motion toward the west-northwest on Monday and Tuesday. Maximum sustained winds remain near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Dorian could be near hurricane strength over the eastern Caribbean Sea.
Based on the latest information, the forecast track of Dorian has shifted slightly south and a path through the central Windwards is more likely late Monday or early Tuesday which could potentially lessen any impacts to the Leewards.
No action is required at this time; however, residents of the Leewards and BVI should continue to closely monitor the progress of this system.
The next information statement will be issued by the Antigua And Barbuda Meteorological Service at 11 am this morning.
