Astronomical tide: Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon on the earth. The sun contributes about one third of the pull, and the moon two-thirds. Each day, there are two high tides and two low tides. When the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are combined. These high tides are considered to be astronomically high.
