The following excerpt from CariCOF’s Caribbean Climate Outlook Newsletter summarizes the climate conditions and related hazards for the upcoming 3-month period November 2026 to January 2027:
During the transition out of the Atlantic Hurricane Season and the Caribbean Wet Season, and into the cool season, a very strong El Niño event implies:
(i) potential expansion and/or intensification of drought;
(ii) fewer episodes of excessive heat, though unseasonably high temperatures for the cool season are very likely;
(iii) unusually low shower, wet spell and excessive rainfall frequency, except in the far northwest of the region;
(iv) high potential for flooding, flash floods, cascading hazards and associated impacts remains across the region, with the possible exception of the ABC Islands and French Guiana;
(v) coral reef bleaching potential around the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles through December.
Dusty Saharan air intrustions, though not so frequent in this season, can temporarily exacerbate heat and deteriorate air quality while inhibiting intense shower activity.
