The following excerpt from CariCOF’s Caribbean Climate Outlook Newsletter summarizes the climate conditions and related hazards for the upcoming 3-month period August to October 2026:
During the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season and the Caribbean Wet Season and the second half of the Heat Season, a very strong El Niño in the Pacific, implies:
(i) intense humid heat into the peak of the Heat Season in September, culminating in recurrent heatwaves, esp. in the Lesser Antilles and Guianas;
(ii) irregular and less frequent than usual bouts of Atlantic Hurricane Season activity;
(iii) potential continuation or exacerbation of drought impacts, particularly in Grand Cayman and the Lesser Antilles;
(iv) lower than usual rainfall frequency than in most years;
(v) despite being less frequent than in most years, the expected occurrence of excessive rainfall events leads to high to extremely high potential for flooding, flash floods, cascading hazards and associated impacts. Intrusions of dusty Saharan air will inhibit tropical cyclone activity, but exacerbate humid heat and deteriorate air quality.
