Nevis Disaster Management Multi-Hazard Campaign: Tsunami

February 14, 2017  ·  ajt

Feel a strong shake?.. See the water withdraw an unusual distance from the shore?.. Hear a Strong Roar?.. Run to Higher Grounds!…… these are timely Tsunami awareness messages the students of Elizabeth Pemberton Primary School would creatively disseminate, in many forms to educate the general public on Tsunami Hazard in this month of February.

The Nevis Disaster Management Department in collaboration with the Department of Education is extremely pleased with the February roll out of our 12-Month Multi-Hazard School Based campaign. January saw the successful launch of this campaign with Charlestown Primary School showcasing Earthquakes.

As we continue this campaign, the month of February will focus on Tsunamis with the Elizabeth Pemberton Primary School. Students of this school will be the main source of information as they use print and electronic media to educate you, the public.

Our history shows that ST Kitts Nevis was impacted by a Tsunami hazard around 5pm on Sunday April 16, 1690. This was after a great earthquake of magnitude 8.0 or higher struck just southeast of the island of Barbuda in the Leeward Islands. UWI Seismic Remarked, “Preparedness and mitigation are paramount mechanisms to enhance behavioural change and safety for future threats, especially when children are concerned.” The utilization of our children to disseminate these messages would groom them into a culture of safety.
