Hurricane Irma has regained Cat 3 status and now has winds of 120mph and is moving in a westerly direction at 13mph. At 5:00pm Friday 1st September 2017, Hurricane Irma was located at 18.8N 39.1W or just about 1550 miles to the ENE of St. Kitts-Nevis. Hurricane force winds extend out to 25 miles from the center and Tropical storm force winds extend 105miles from the center. Fluctuations in intensity are expected through the weekend but Hurricane Irma is expected to remain a dangerous hurricane as it approaches the island chain. Based on the early projections it should be in the vicinity of the Leeward Islands by late Tuesday or Wednesday.
The exact path is uncertain at this moment but RESIDENTS ARE URGED TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to the progress of this hurricane through the weekend. Updates will be provided daily by the St. Kitts Meteorological Services and NEMA through the various media houses. Residents are encouraged to utilize the weekend and early next week to ensure that their preparations are completed and to listen for official updates from the St. Kitts/Nevis Met Services and NEMA and NDMD in Nevis.
